Wild Nature Project Forest School
"Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels
along grass-stained sleeves to the heart."

2023 Forest School
The opportunity to do classes like this is one of the great things about homeschooling! Kids get dropped off with us to learn wilderness survival skills, wild edible & medicinal plants, navigation, plant & tree identification, how to use tools like saws and carving knives, and more.
Forest School provides kids with whole body learning in the wilderness where we engage with nature through stories, play, activities, and curiosity. Some days we wander the forests and explore timelessly while other days we gather near a campfire for crafting utensils, tools, or bark containers.
This class becomes an important peer group for kids. They can practice speaking in front of others, sharing space and tools, and growing their emotional intelligence. All this with caring adults who plan fun adventures and guide the experience.

"My kids LOVE wild nature project! The classes, the camps, Friday nights, everything. Every staff member they’ve worked with has been encouraging and supportive and meets them where they are in their outside journey." -Melissa Kunkel

Meet our Lead Staff
Whole body and mind learning:
Our classes for youth puts kids in touch with wild nature. We venture off-trail gathering wild edible plants, building fire for warmth and cooking food, while listening to the voices of birds to tell us where the hawk or owl are hiding. Our curriculum follows the cycles of the seasons looking at what is available for harvest and staying attuned to what our basic needs are in that particular season. Games, challenges, and group activities teach us to think quickly, work together, and to use our resources wisely. Kids gain competency in a variety of life-skills that will help them in school, business, friendships, and family. We know this because of the feedback we've received from those in their teens and 20s who grew up with these connective experiences. This is whole-body and mind learning through sensory awareness, movement, challenge, and play.

Video: How to Use a Knife Safely
Around age 7 we start teaching kids how to use a knife for carving wood and projects. Here's a video that shares our knife safety rules to keep safe when kids are carving at home. This way you can have the same rules at home that we have at Wild Nature Project for consistency.
